PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This class is an overview of Civilization of Spain with stress in geography, history, art, and the present reality of the country. It emphasizes the culture of Spain as a crossroads of other cultures and their synthesis, and its importance in the shaping of the Spanish speaking world. An important additional element of this class will be the support in processing the immersion experience of the program abroad from a linguistic, cultural, and academic point of view. The class will be conducted in Spanish. 
 
TENTATIVE ITINERARY

May 29            Departure
May 30            Arrive to Madrid. Meet the program director and staff of travel provider, and travel to Salamanca to meet host family
May 31            Orientation session
June 1             Placement tests, class schedules become available
June 2-5          Regular class schedule begins
June 6-7          Free weekend in Salamanca
June 8-12        Regular class schedule continues
June 13           *Trip to Merida
June 14           Free Sunday
June 15-19      Regular class schedule continues
June 20           *Trip to Segovia - Avila
June 21           Free Sunday
June 22-25      Regular class schedule concludes
June 26           Final exam and presentation of student diplomas
June 27           Return flight

*The dates for day trips are subject to change

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Instructor Permission, Completion of Spanish 3
This program is open to KSU and non-KSU credit seeking participants.
 

HOUSING AND TRANSPORTATION
  • Lodging: Home stay (host families) organized by Spanish Learning. Participants will be placed with host families in pairs, when possible.
  • Transportation: International flight to Madrid, transportation during tour dates provided by Spanish Learning 


PROGRAM COST
  • Program Fees Collected by the Study Abroad Office: $3825 (Program Fee to Spanish Learning, transportation in the host country, accommodations, group meals, classroom rental, events/tours/admissions, international health insurance, etc.)
  • Additional Anticipated Expenses: $1635 (international airfare, passport fees, etc.)
  • Estimated K-State Tuition and Fees for Undergraduate Course: $822.30 tution and fees for 3-credit hour undergraduate course. $24 College of Arts and Sciences fee. $25 MLANG Placeholder Course. $21.50 Global Campus Fee.
*The program is based on a minimum of 10 participants. If there are more than 20 participants, then the program fee will be reduced. 
PAYMENT SCHEDULE TO STUDY ABROAD OFFICE
  • Application deadline and $1400 due on March 6, 2015
  • Second payment of $1400 due on March 13, 2015
  • Third payment of $1025 due on March 26, 2015
Program fees are collected by the Study Abroad Office, 304 Fairchild Hall.
K-State tuition/fees and DCE fee are billed to K-State student ISIS accounts.
 
PAYMENT OPTIONS FOR PROGRAM FEES
  • Check (Checks should be made out to Kansas State University. If you submit a check, be sure the following information is listed on the check: student name, program name, location, name of instructor who is teaching the course and K-State student ID)
  • Credit Card (The Study Abroad Office is able to accept card payments using American Express, Discover, Master Card, and Visa)
  • Cash (Payments made in cash must be made in the exact amount of the payment due.)

Dr. Benjamin Torrico teaches a broad variety of language, literature, and culture classes in the Modern Languages department, with a specialty in medieval and baroque literature. He has led student groups to Spain on numerous occasions with our institution and others. He has also taught foreign students in Spain.
